IBM makes Bob self-hosted for air-gapped agentic coding

On October 1, 2026 IBM announced self-hosted deployment for Bob, its agentic coding platform. The deployment supports on-prem, private cloud, sovereign cloud, and air-gapped environments

IBM Bob goes self-hosted for organizations that cannot connect to the cloud

IBM introduced self-hosted deployment for Bob on October 1, 2026. The deployment option allows organizations to run Bob's agentic coding capabilities on their own infrastructure without internet access

The self-hosted deployment supports on-premises servers, private cloud environments, sovereign cloud deployments, and fully air-gapped networks. IBM says this is designed for industries with strict data residency and security requirements

Who gets IBM Bob self-hosted

IBM Bob self-hosted is available to enterprise customers with existing IBM contracts. The deployment option is not available to individual developers or small teams

IBM says 80,000 of its own employees already use Bob for coding tasks. The self-hosted deployment extends this usage to customers in regulated industries

What is actually new about IBM Bob self-hosted

Self-hosted deployment is a significant shift for IBM Bob, which was previously cloud-only. The air-gapped support means Bob can now be used in environments where internet connectivity is restricted or prohibited

The sovereign cloud support addresses compliance requirements for government and financial organizations that require data to remain within specific geographic boundaries

What the launch does not settle

IBM has not disclosed the hardware requirements or minimum infrastructure specifications for self-hosted Bob deployments. Pricing for the self-hosted option was not announced

No independent evaluation of Bob's self-hosted capabilities has been published as of October 9, 2026. All claims come from IBM's press release

What to do now

Enterprise customers in regulated industries should evaluate IBM Bob self-hosted for air-gapped coding workflows. Organizations already using Bob in the cloud should assess whether self-hosted deployment meets their compliance needs

The 80,000 internal IBM users provide a large-scale reference case for self-hosted agentic coding. Other enterprises should consider this as evidence of production viability
