OpenAI tests Sponsored Agents: ads that open a business chat

After a labeled ChatGPT ad, users can start a separate conversation with an advertiser-sponsored agent. Help Center privacy rules still bar sharing chats with advertisers.

The news

Primary: OpenAI, "Reimagining advertising with AI", 16 September 2026.

OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents. After a user sees a relevant ad in ChatGPT, they can choose to start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent. The user can ask follow-ups and follow a link to the business site when ready. OpenAI states the Sponsored Agent conversation is distinct from ChatGPT's independent answers and separate from the original chat thread. Testing is with select advertisers in the United States.

Same post ships adjacent ad-platform work:

  • Natural-language campaign create/update/analyze via an Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT Work
  • AI-suggested copy and imagery inside Ads Manager (advertiser reviews before use)
  • Optional AI-powered text customization and translation of ad copy to fit conversation context
  • HubSpot as first CRM partner and Shopify as first ecommerce partner for ChatGPT Ads management

Businesses can start at ads.openai.com, with Shopify and HubSpot app paths linked from the post.

Why it matters

Ads move from a labeled unit under a response into a full sponsored dialogue. That changes the product surface operators and privacy reviewers must map: ordinary ads, Sponsored Agent threads, and the main assistant are three different conversation objects in OpenAI's description.

What to do now

  • If you buy ChatGPT Ads: read the Sponsored Agents test scope (U.S., select advertisers) and decide whether your brand should be in the agent conversation format versus static units.
  • If you run Free/Go ChatGPT: know ads may appear under responses; Plus/Pro/Business/Enterprise/Edu remain ad-free per Help Center.
  • If you handle privacy reviews: pull the Help Center rules on what advertisers do and do not receive (see companion field notes).
  • Shopify merchants in eligible markets: note the ChatGPT Ads app path and the international expansion date OpenAI gives (23 September for markets where ChatGPT Ads are available).

Help Center primary: "Ads in ChatGPT". Key lines for this dispatch: ads do not influence ChatGPT answers; ads are labeled and separated; advertisers do not receive chats, history, memories, or personal details by default; aggregated views/clicks reporting for the early test; personalization controls under Settings > Ad Controls.

Caveats

Whether Sponsored Agent threads inherit every ordinary-ad control (hide, report, sensitive-topic exclusion) with the same wording is only partially specified in the public Help Center FAQ we retrieved. Treat agent-specific Action handoffs and confirmation UX as UNKNOWN where the public docs are silent.
